STATE OF CHILDREN'S RIGHTS AND BUSINESS 2025

In our 2025 benchmark report,  Telia stands out as one of the top-performing companies, earning a score of 9.7 out of 10.
This reflects Telia’s deep commitment to embedding children’s rights into its strategy, governance, and product innovation.

As a major telecom operator in the Nordic region, Telia recognises both the opportunities and challenges that come with digitalisation. The company’s efforts go beyond compliance — focusing on creating a safer, more empowering digital environment for children.

“Growing up is both exciting and challenging. So is today’s online world. At Telia, our secure and sustainable networks give us an opportunity – and a responsibility – to shape empowering digital environments for children. Our high score in the latest GCF Benchmark reflects our commitment to this vital task and will push us to do even more.” – Anna Augustson, Head of Group Sustainability.

Q: What do you think explains the Nordic region’s leadership in integrating a child rights perspective into their businesses?
Anna Auguston: In my view, it’s due to Nordic companies integrating sustainability more generally into their business strategies. There’s a broad understanding of the importance of sustainability from both a social and business performance point of view. Children’s rights are increasingly seen as a key component of human rights due diligence processes, especially in supply chains and product development.

Q: Telia has made children’s rights a core part of its strategy. What drove that decision?
A.A.: Very simply, children are active users of our products and services. We see it as Telia’s responsibility to work to ensure that these offerings support children’s safety, privacy and well-being.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to a Nordic company looking to step up their support for children, what would it be?
A.A.: Don’t assume – ask! Listen to children and understand what’s important for them and how that relates to your business. Whether it’s through advisory panels or civil society partnerships, make space for children’s voices and insights.

Telia’s approach demonstrates how a major digital provider can align innovation with responsibility — embedding children’s rights into corporate culture, product design, and long-term strategy.

As digitalization continues to shape young people’s lives, Telia’s example highlights the importance of keeping children’s voices, safety, and empowerment at the center of business decisions.
