A Founder’s Vision
for Children

A text-based version (suitable for screen-reading software) of our video celebrating the legacy of H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Global Child Forum, on the occasion of his 80th birthday

In honour of His Majesty The King’s 80th birthday, we look back on the journey he helped set in motion with Global Child Forum – and on the words that have continued to guide its work.

2009: A vision takes shape

Global Child Forum was initiated by H.M. The King and H.M. The Queen of Sweden to create a global platform placing youth at the centre.

“The Queen and I have shared a common dream for a while. To create a forum for the situation of children and young people in the world.”

2017: Raising the level of ambition

As our annual Forum event grew internationally, His Majesty’s message was clear: children’s rights demand the highest urgency and leadership.

“When it comes to health, safety and wellbeing of children, there is no room for modest ambitions. We have an obligation to strive for the best.”

2018: Defining a core principle

At the Stockholm Royal Palace, His Majesty underlined why business and finance leaders are uniquely positioned to protect and advance children’s rights.

“Business impacts children – and therefore, we must let children impact business.”

2022: A guiding light for leaders

His Majesty challenged leaders to act with clarity and purpose.

“The North Star is famous for holding steady while the entire northern sky moves around it …a guiding light. So I ask you today, what is your North Star?”

2024: Listening to children

His Majesty offered a powerful reminder that advancing children’s rights means not only protecting children, but listening to them.

“Too often, children’s voices…are ignored. Young people deserve to have a voice in how these decisions are made.”

2025: A clear call to business

More than 15 years after Global Child Forum was founded, His Majesty’s message remains focused and forward-looking.

“We must integrate children’s rights into business practices, ensuring that corporate operations protect the wellbeing of children globally.”

Today: An enduring legacy

In Global Child Forum, His Majesty has helped shape an organisation that calls on business and society to do more for children.

“Let us move forward with a renewed dedication to listen, to learn, and to act.”

We celebrate His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday, with gratitude for initiating our mission – that strives to shape the lives of children and young people everywhere.
