ListenUp: What Teenagers
Want Tech to Hear

Essential insights from teens around the world

The ListenUp! initiative, led by Global Child Forum, aims to improve digital wellbeing for children and youth.

As part of the first phase, 93 teenagers (ranging in age from 13–17) from eight countries participated in focus groups to share their views on the technology of today – how it impacts their daily lives, relationships, learning, and sense of self.

Young people are a key stakeholder in the debate on technology and social media, but too often their views are not respected, or even sought out to begin with.

The initiative and the resulting study, ListenUp: What Teenagers Want Tech to Hear, aims to counter this, asking teens to share their experience and spotlighting both the negative and beneficial impacts of digital platforms, which can both support and hinder young people’s wellbeing.

What were the findings?

Teens want better technology, that works to enhance their lives. They expect companies to take responsibility for designing safer, more supportive digital spaces that foster connection, creativity, learning, and emotional safety.

This phase of ListenUp! was developed together with ESSEC Business School – E&MISE Lab (Social and Environmental Impact Evaluation Lab) and Participation People, and in collaboration with our corporate partners Orange, Tele2, Telia Company and Vodafone Group, who jointly supported the research design and selection of diverse markets for the study.
