PRESS RELEASE
Stockholm, September 23
On September 22, world leaders at the UN Headquarters adopted the Pact for the Future, including its key annexes, the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and the Declaration on the Future. Recognised as a pivotal outcome of the Summit of the Future, this landmark agreement aims to redefine the multilateral system to address today’s global challenges and seize new opportunities.
“I called for this Summit because 21st-century challenges require 21st-century solutions: frameworks that are networked and inclusive; and that draw on the expertise of all of humanity,” said Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. “The Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations open pathways to new possibilities and opportunities.”
Co-led by Sweden and Zambia, the GDC is the first comprehensive global framework for digital cooperation. The GDC emphasises the applicability of international law and the protection of human rights in the digital space, urging private companies to act responsibly and create a safe environment, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children. Key commitments include promoting information integrity, protecting democratic processes, expanding internet access, and investing in digital infrastructure, innovation, and entrepreneurship. While not a complete solution to all digital challenges, the GDC provides a solid foundation for the UN, member states, and stakeholders to build upon.
Ekin Björstedt, Secretary General of Global Child Forum, praised the GDC’s commitment to digital safety and responsible governance: “We commend this groundbreaking initiative as a significant step towards creating a safer and more inclusive digital environment, especially for children. As an organisation dedicated to championing children’s rights in the digital space, we are proud to see Sweden and Zambia leading this important effort. We call on all companies to embrace the principles of the GDC, act responsibly, and prioritise the safety and well-being of vulnerable groups in the digital world.”
The adoption of the Pact for the Future, including the GDC and the Declaration on Future Generations, highlights the urgent need for multilateral cooperation to navigate the digital age responsibly. Global Child Forum is committed to supporting the implementation of these principles to create a more open, safe, and sustainable digital future for all.
